Most water bottles come from petroleum. Ours come from the field. We make them from PLA — a plant-based material derived from corn starch — using the same U.S. No. 2 yellow corn that farmers across the Midwest grow every year. Renewable at the source, and it keeps your money in the farm economy instead of the oil economy.

The problem we're walking away from

Microplastics have been found in human blood, brain, and placenta.1 A typical liter of PET bottled water carries about 240,000 plastic fragments — roughly 90% of them nanoplastics.2 What that means for health is still being studied, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Why corn plastic is different

PLA is a plant-based polymer made from corn starch. In the presence of water or humidity, it hydrolyzes — breaking down into lactic acid, a food-grade substance — rather than fragmenting into particles that persist in the environment.3 It also contains no BPA and no phthalates.

What we can honestly say

We can't claim our bottle changes what's already in your body — nobody can prove that yet. But we can choose a material that doesn't add persistent microplastic pollution to the problem. We'd rather tell you the truth than sell you a fear.

Let's be straight about it. If a No. 2 bottle ends up in a landfill, that's not the end of the world — it's no worse there than what it replaced. But that's not the bottle we made it for.

Every year, millions of bottles never reach a landfill at all. One rolls off a tailgate. One gets left on a fence post. They end up in the ditch along a country road — the red dirt of Tennessee, the snowy hills of Montana, every creek bed and tree line in between. From there they wash into the rivers, and the rivers carry them to the sea.

That's the bottle that matters most to us. Because ours is made from corn, not petroleum. Out in the open — in the rain, in a creek, under the sun — it breaks back down into the simple, natural things it came from, the way a cornstalk does. It doesn't sit there for four hundred years.

Yes — that's the whole point. Made from corn, it breaks back down into the same natural materials it came from. In a compost facility, that happens fast. Left to nature, it just takes a little longer. Either way, it goes back to where it started.

Honestly, it's no worse there than any other bottle — sealed landfills don't break much of anything down. But the bottles we worry about are the ones that never make it to a landfill: the ones on the side of the road, in a creek, or drifting toward the ocean. Out in the open, corn plastic breaks back down into natural compounds instead of sitting there for four hundred years.

No. This is a cold-water bottle. PLA softens under heat, so it's built for cold, clean water — not coffee. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have a bottle fail on you.
